Are Crystals Safe for Internal Use?

This is a fair question, and one we've been answering since 2011.

Not every crystal belongs inside the body. A decorative wand or raw point from a metaphysical shop may contain fractures, rough edges, or surface imperfections that make it unsuitable for intimate use. Whether a crystal is appropriate for internal use comes down to two things: the material itself and how the object was made.

The Material

Most concerns about crystal safety revolve around the question of porosity. This is because historically sex toys have been grouped into two categories: porous and non-porous.

In conversations about sex toy safety, porous materials are those that can allow moisture and bacteria to move beneath the surface, making them more difficult to clean thoroughly over time. Materials such as jelly rubber, PVC, and certain soft plastics fall into this category. Glass, stainless steel, and medical-grade silicone are generally considered body-safe because they do not present the same concerns.

Crystals invite a more nuanced conversation.

What matters is not simply whether a material contains microscopic pores, but whether it is permeable in a way that allows moisture, bacteria, or contaminants to penetrate the material itself and remain there over time.

The crystals most commonly used in the Chakrubs collection, including rose quartz, clear quartz, and amethyst, are composed of silicon dioxide, the same compound that makes up glass. The difference is in the structure. Glass is silicon dioxide cooled into a smooth, amorphous solid. Quartz is silicon dioxide grown into a dense, repeating crystalline lattice.

This distinction helps explain why polished quartz behaves differently than soft porous materials. While natural stone may contain microscopic surface irregularities, dense quartz varieties do not present the same permeability concerns associated with materials such as jelly rubber or PVC. With proper care, they can be cleaned effectively and enjoyed for years.

Additionally, Obsidian, used in designs such as the Viper, is naturally occurring volcanic glass.

The Craftsmanship

Material is only part of the equation.

A crystal sold as a decorative object is not necessarily intended for intimate use. It may contain natural fractures, uneven polishing, or structural imperfections that make it inappropriate for the body.

Every Chakrub begins as a piece of mother stone that has never been owned, handled intimately, or previously used. It is then carved specifically for the body, polished to a smooth finish without dyes or chemicals, and individually inspected before it reaches its owner.

Since 2011, we have worked with thousands of customers and continuously refined our standards for sourcing, carving, polishing, and quality control. Our understanding of crystal safety comes from both the characteristics of the material and years of real-world experience creating crystal tools for intimate wellness.

Caring for Your Chakrub

Caring for a Chakrub is simple.

Wash your piece with warm water and a mild soap before and after use. Allow it to dry fully before storing it in a clean, dry place.

As with any intimate object, proper care and regular inspection are part of a safe and lasting practice.

Why a Chakrub?

At Chakrubs, we believe intimate objects can be both functional and meaningful.

Every Chakrub is carved from mother stone, shaped specifically for the body, polished by hand, and held to rigorous quality standards. The result is an object that brings together craftsmanship, durability, ritual, and pleasure in a form designed to last for years.

When cared for properly, a Chakrub becomes more than a product. It becomes a personal object, one that accompanies moments of connection, reflection, and self-discovery throughout a lifetime.

If you have questions about crystal safety or caring for your Chakrub, we are always happy to help.
