One of the most exciting industry developments has been the popularity of the molecular compound cannabidiol, most commonly referred to as CBD. CBD is produced by the leaves and flowers of female hemp plants and is one of 113 cannabinoids unique to the hemp plant. Hemp is defined as any cannabis plants with less than 0.3% THC by weight. Because hemp has such low THC levels, it is non-psychoactive by definition.

This week, the U.S. is poised to pass the bipartisan 2018 Farm Bill, which will legalize hemp production across the country. Many hope that hemp will become the new cash crop for middle America, which has struggled to make profits as tobacco production has dramatically decreased. The 2018 Farm Bill will allow hemp to be eligible for crop insurance and open up trade and consumption across state lines. It removes industrial hemp and its extracts from classification as a Schedule I Drug according to the Controlled Substances Act, where it was interpreted as marijuana. Marijuana remains a Schedule I drug, which the US Drug Enforcement Administration defines as having “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse,” despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Industry analysts estimate the US market for CBD will be worth nearly $600 million this year.
